Insulating a City of Oaks, Students and Storms
Spray Foam Insulation in Tallahassee starts with the heat. The city's airport averages 92.1F on July afternoons and about 73F at night in Wikipedia's 1991-2020 climate table, and the air stays wet: average relative humidity runs about 80% in July. Air conditioners here work long hours removing both heat and moisture. Our job is to keep as much of that outside air out of the house as we can, and to slow the heat coming through the roof and walls.
A city of many housing types
Tallahassee has been Florida's capital since 1824, but most of its homes are far newer. The University of Florida GeoPlan summary of census data shows Leon County growing from 81,325 housing units in 1990 to 132,398 in the 2017-2021 American Community Survey. Renters occupied 55,710 of those units and owners 61,967, a near-even split driven by a student population Wikipedia puts above 70,000 between Florida State, Florida A&M and Tallahassee Community College. The county also counted 10,149 mobile homes.
That mix shapes the work. Owner-occupied homes often need an attic brought up to the R-38 level after years of settling and HVAC work. Rental owners want lower bills and fewer comfort calls between leases. Mobile homes have their own limits on what can be added under the floor and in the roof cavity.
The attic is usually the first stop
Many Tallahassee homes put the air handler and ductwork in a vented attic. On a sunny afternoon that space runs much hotter than the air outside, so any leak in the ducts or the ceiling below costs you cooling. We seal the gaps around lights, fans, plumbing vents and the attic hatch, then either blow insulation to depth on the attic floor or spray open-cell foam under the roof deck so the ducts sit in a cooler space. Which one fits depends on the roof, the ducts and the budget, and we price both when both make sense.
Trees, storms and outages
Tallahassee is known for its shade. The city has nine officially designated canopy roads, and Wikipedia calls the Southern Live Oak perhaps its most emblematic tree. Big trees also mean branches on roofs in storms. Hurricane Hermine in 2016 cut power to about 80% of the city, Hurricane Michael in 2018 cut power to about 95% of Leon County, and two EF2 tornadoes hit on May 10, 2024. After a leak, wet attic insulation should come out once the roof is fixed. A sealed, well-insulated house also gains heat more slowly when the power is out.
City of Tallahassee Utilities ceiling insulation grant
If the City supplies your electricity, its ceiling insulation grant pays 80% of the installed cost up to $400, or up to $500 for income-qualified customers, on jobs of at least $500. A free energy audit comes first, work is done by contractors on the city's approved list, and only blown fiberglass and loose-fill cellulose qualify, to R-38 for most homes and R-49 for homes with electric resistance heat. Foam, batts and radiant barriers are not covered. We will tell you plainly whether your project fits, and if part of your home needs foam, we explain how that part would be priced on its own.

Tallahassee Questions
Does the City of Tallahassee pay for spray foam insulation?
Not through its ceiling insulation grant, which covers only blown fiberglass and loose-fill cellulose installed by contractors on the city's approved list. The grant pays 80% up to $400, or up to $500 for income-qualified customers, after a free energy audit.
Is spray foam a good idea for a Tallahassee rental?
Often for the attic and crawl space, where it lowers bills and cuts comfort complaints. On an open attic floor, blown-in insulation with air sealing may cost less. We price both for landlords so they can choose.
What R-value should my Tallahassee attic have?
R-38 is the ceiling level in the 2023 Florida energy code for Zone 2. DOE suggests R-49 to R-60 for an attic with no insulation.
My ceiling got wet in a storm. Does the insulation need to come out?
Usually, once the roof is repaired. Wet insulation loses R-value and holds water against the drywall and framing. We check it and quote removal and replacement.
